Known for the old lemon houses and the picturesque alleyways of the old town center, Limone sul Garda is among the most celebrated places on the western side of the lake. A treasure chest of history, culture and beauty to discover during a holiday dedicated to relaxation and gastronomic delicacies.
Strolling through the narrow streets of Limone sul Garda: so many surprises!
The liveliness that characterizes the lakefront of Limone sul Garda, the hub of nightlife and the ideal destination for a romantic evening for two, will not leave visitors indifferent. Here you’ll find the trendiest spots to sip a delicious drink with a privileged view of the surrounding waters and mountains, and a wide choice of shops and small grocery stores where you can buy local products such as extra virgin olive oil from Lake Garda, the renowned limoncello liqueur, sausages, cheeses, and other citrus-based delicacies.
Walk through the marvelous narrow streets and stop at the splendid little port in the heart of the old town center, breathe in the local breeze and prepare yourself to climb the fascinating stairway that leads to one of the most important sites of interest in the town: the Limonaia del Castél.
Limonaia del Castél, a heritage site to be rediscovered
Redeveloped by the Municipal Administration following intensive restoration work that culminated in the planting of some seventy citrus trees and inaugurated in the early 2000s, the Limonaia del Castél is today one of the few remaining active symbols of this ancient tradition.
In the past it was among the biggest production facilities in the area. Today you can take a real step back in time here, watching cedars, lemons, sweet and bitter oranges, chinottes, bergamots, grapefruits, mandarins and kumquats illuminated by the sun up close. The educational trail is enhanced by display signs and a projection telling the story of this place. The view of the lake from the terraces is exceptional.
For information on opening hours see the page dedicated to the Limonaia del Castél on visitlimonesulgarda.com or contact the municipality at +39 0365 954008.
Other must-do experiences in Limone sul Garda
From citrus fruits to the allure of olive trees: we highly recommend a walk with breathtaking views from the lakefront to the new pedestrian and bike path overlooking the water. The path winds quietly just a few meters from the lake, and through ancient dwellings and centuries-old trees, takes you back to the Gardesana road at the entrance to what is, according to many, the most spectacular footbridge in Europe.
Other attractions in Limone sul Garda include the birthplace of Daniele Comboni, founder of the Religious Institute of Comboni Missionaries; the Museum of Tourism, set up in the premises of the former Town Hall; and the Fishermen Museum inside the Lemon House of Villa Boghi.
Among the places of worship not to be missed are the St. Peter’s Church, the oldest one in Limone, and the St. Rocco’s Church, located north of the old town center, wchich can be reached via a pretty stairway adorned with local flowers.
