The Museo di Santa Giulia is one of the main tourist and cultural attractions in Brescia, also known as ‘museum of the city‘. It includes important historic exhibits and is housed in the very evocative location of a former monastery. It is home to an incredible collections from prehistory to the present day and also puts on temporary exhibitions of international relevance.

The Museo di Santa Giulia together with the Capitolium archaeological area and the San Salvatore monastic complex form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Museo di Santa Giulia: from Cross of Desiderius to the Winged Victory

The tour of the Museo di Santa Giulia starts on the ground floor, where visitors are immediately immersed in the city’s past thanks to the exhibits bearing witness to the religious, architectural, and artistic history of the monastery.

On the first floor, visitors can admire the beautiful Church of Santa Maria in Solario, which guards a display containing the Cross of King Desiderius, which dates back to the 9th-century A.D. and is still today one of the most important known works of jewellery.

The monastery complex is also home to other invaluable testimonies to Brescia’s illustrious past: the Domus dell’Ortaglia (Roman villas), the Basilica di San Salvatore, the Coro delle Monache (Nuns’ Chancel) and the statue of the Winged Victory. Stroll by old Roman houses, medieval cloisters, and over 11,000 works of art, on a fascinating journey that takes you back to ancient Brixia of 2,300 years ago.

The UNESCO Corridor and the new Roman section

The year of Brescia as Italian Capital of Culture brought great news, first among which is the new UNESCO Corridor, offering a journey through 2,500 years of history in just one kilometer!

This is a monumental walk that connects the Santa Giulia Museum with the nearby Archaeological Park of Roman Brescia, unifying the World Heritage area of Brescia.

For the first time ever, a single pedestrian route winds its way through Brescia’s historical monumental architecture. The route is open freely and free of charge to the public. But that’s not all: a new section entirely dedicated to the Roman age is on stage inside the Museum!

An updated exhibition path is proposed in a modern and dynamic way, mostly focused on the Late Antique period (4th-5th century AD) and especially on very important finds never fully displayed until now: numerous votive objects (jewels, engraved glass, amphorae, decorated ceramics) that were once donated by the faithful and were mostly found during archaeological excavations in the Capitolium area just waiting to be admired once again.

The new Roman section is embellished by three multimedia installations and an extraordinary combination of audio, video and lights for an immersive and innovative journey where technology becomes the beating heart of the narrative. Find out more

A dive into contemporary art with Emilio Isgrò

The Viridarium – Sculpture Park of the Santa Giulia Museum is enriched by an extraordinary contemporary work of art. We are talking about Mondo d’acciaio (World of Steel), an imposing steel globe with a diameter of four metres created by the Messina artist Emilio Isgrò, which emerges from the lawn in a game of balances and proportions with the surrounding monumental space.
