Visitors arriving in Sirmione find themselves in front of this splendid castle, which immediately creates a long-lasting memory. Still in very good condition and in a strategic position at the entrance to the town, Scaligero Castle is an impressive fortress rich with history.
And when the sun goes down, Sirmione assumes the magical atmosphere of a fairy tale: the castle walls are illuminated by soft coloured lights, their reflections in the water generating a feeling of peace and relaxation.
The Rocca di Sirmione: an unforgettable first impression
The castle is the first sight for visitors to Sirmione: it’s the only point of access to the old town and was built around 1300 to protect the village and the harbour. The current pedestrian access is where the drawbridge over the lake used to be.
The castle, which over the years was expanded with the addition of the dock and ramparts around the village, is a rare example of a fortified harbour.
Tours and events at La Rocca
Touring the castle, the first area you see is the main courtyard, surrounded by high walls and corner towers. Moving on, you will find the dock courtyard, ancient refuge of the Scaligeri fleetn, and a second courtyard from which 146 steps lead up to the patrol path.
The portico of the castle houses a collection of Roman and medieval gravestones and a small exhibition with the most relevant information about the castle.
In the summer, the ancient castle hosts exclusive concerts and other events. The castle can be visited every day except Mondays. There are also combined tickets for both Scaligero Castle and the Grottoes of Catullus.
